To resolve these problems, get the releases of libc6 and dpkg from Debian 2.1 (or later). Patching your kernel is no longer necessary.
Note that the current version of dpkg in unstable, 1.4.1, does have some chown problems. Revert to 1.4.0.34 until this is fixed.
